Well, we just had the first huge storm for the year last night. REALLY bad wind, rain, lightning. A tornado warning was issued.
Joshua fell asleep around 8:30pm and my husband and I were heading toward sleep around 11:00pm when the phone rang. We got word that the strong storm system was on its way and should arrive by 11:50pm. So I started praying. The storm was pretty much on time but we still managed to fall asleep. Then around 2am, I woke up and noticed the baby monitor wasn't on. Oh boy..... no power! My husband got up, got dressed, grabbed a flashlight and pulled some "necessary" items such as the diaper bag, bottles, food, my purse, money, into one area - the closet! Through all the commotion and no CD playing like usual in Joshua's room, he slept through every bit of it. But we were prepared and prayed up in case we all had to go into the walk-in closet. We never had to. The storm died down. The only time Joshua cried was during his normal sleep stage change but he went right back to sleep!

Was it a nightmare?
I understand what people mean now when they say every baby is different and do what you feel like you need to do with your baby. I've heard the stories about when your baby cries at night to leave them alone. Ok....well, it's according to their cry. Almost every night, Joshua wakes up in the middle of the night crying, but in about 2-3 minutes, he's back asleep. I believe he's just changing sleep cycles. Well, a couple of nights ago, I'd lay him down for the night when about 2 hours later, he's crying. It doesn't sound like the typical cry. Somethings a little weird here. I went in there and I honestly believe he was having a nightmare. He was on his back, still asleep, kicking his little legs. I'm thinking, I can't leave him like this. He needed to know I was there for him. I picked him up and in about 30 seconds he was calm. I lay him down and he slept the rest of the night.

Headbanger on my hands!
I've noticed for about a month now that in the middle of the night (somewhere between 12am and 6am), Joshua will start moaning/crying and then bang his head on the crib all while not opening his eyes. I watch him on the monitor and he will keep his eyes closed and either bang his head on the mattress or into the rails. Thank goodness I didn't take the bumperguards down. They say it's a soother in between stages of sleep. Mostly he'll go back to sleep within about 3 - 5 minutes. I have had a couple of episodes where he didn't go back to sleep for a while and I just went in there to him. I'm not really into letting him cry it out. I will for about 5 minutes, but anything over that, I'll go check on him because you never know for sure until you do. He might have an arm or leg that went under the bumperguard and thru the rails. He might have pooped and might have had a hard time with it. Anyway, we asked the pediatrician about the headbanging. He said he (the dr) banged his head until he was 8 years old!! Oh man.....I hope it doesn't last THAT long!

Sleeping Prince
Well, the last 2 nights Joshua slept all night long. Last night, I gave him a bath and brushed his teeth, and went to the nursery. We played peek-a-boo with the blanket about 3 times and he put his head back and closed his eyes. He only cried out 1 time for about 3 seconds in the middle of the night and he went back to sleep. He woke up around 8:30am. He loves to walk...where he used to love his exercauser, he now has to be moving!

hmmm. What changed?
Ok. For a couple of months, Joshua has been sleeping through the night. I'm not sure if it's the fact that he's growing and learning how to walk, getting into everything or what, but lately he's been waking up about 1:30 - 2:00am crying and then doesn't get back to sleep until 3:30 or 4am. Normally he'd wake up for about 2 minutes, cry, and then go back to sleep. But now, I wait it out for about 5 minutes, but his cry just gets harder! He'll still be laying on his stomach, but he'll be crying so hard! Right when I think he's settling down, he starts crying again. Not knowing for sure is stressful! Is it that his stomach is hurting, did he have a bad dream, is he hungry? If he's hit his growth spurt, then he may be pretty hungry. Does he not like to be cooped up in his bed and just wants to try out his new found abilities?
Now last night was a little different - he slept from about 7:30pm - 4:45am. Not too bad. I can handle that. I'd taken a Tylenol Nighttime around 11pm last night so I still had a bit of "nighttime" in me at 4:45am, but that's ok. I love to take care of my son. After 2 bottles, he was mostly happy and decided he wanted to romp! Joshua doesn't sleep in our room, but when he wakes up around 4:00 or 5am and can't go back to sleep, I just let him romp on our bed. It's special time for me, my husband, and Joshua. Joshua crawls all over us, laughs, smiles, cuts up. Then he wears himself out and we put him back in his crib.
